The rescue team of the German civil protecยญtion organยญiยญsaยญtion @fire was able to save two people alive from several collapsed apartยญment blocks in the city of Kahraยญmanยญmaras (Turkey) early this morning.
The 17-member search and rescue team (USAR) had set off with the two rescue dogs from Adana airport to the town of Kahraยญmanยญmaras in the southยญern part of Anatoยญlia on Tuesยญday. With part of the main commuยญniยญcaยญtion roads destroyed, it was an arduยญous jourยญney over snow-covered roads in the mounยญtains. In the afterยญnoon, the USAR team reached the heavยญily destroyed city and set up their base of operations.
Immeยญdiยญately, the exploยญration of the area and the first search and rescue measures were started. Several people were located in several collapsed apartยญment blocks and buildยญings. In the early mornยญing hours, two people were already rescued alive from the rubble in coopยญerยญaยญtion with the local emerยญgency services. The rescue of the other people located in the debris strucยญtures is ongoing.













@fire continยญues to support the operยญaยญtion of the Reception/Department Centre (RDC) at Adana Airport with three addiยญtional operยญaยญtional staff. The arrivยญing interยญnaยญtional search and rescue teams are regisยญtered and coorยญdiยญnated there. The RDC is thus taking on a first imporยญtant task in coorยญdiยญnatยญing interยญnaยญtional aid under the banner of the United Nations Interยญnaยญtional Search and Rescue Adviยญsory Group (INSARAG).
On Monday evening, at the request of the Turkยญish Embassy and in coorยญdiยญnaยญtion with the German Foreign Office, the rescue team of the German aid organยญiยญsaยญtion @fire set out from Frankยญfurt Airport for the Turkยญish earthยญquake region with 17 volunยญteer disasยญter relief workยญers and two rescue dogs.

V. is a non-profit civil protecยญtion orgaยญniยญzaยญtion that has been providยญing rapid emerยญgency aid worldยญwide followยญing devasยญtatยญing natural disasยญters since 2002. Responยญders are specially trained in wildยญland fireยญfightยญing (WFF) and search and rescue of buried victims after earthยญquakes (USAR). All of the more than 400 members are involved in national and interยญnaยญtional disasยญter relief on a volunยญtary and unpaid basis. The civil protecยญtion orgaยญniยญzaยญtion was clasยญsiยญfied as the worldโs first Light USAR Team by the United Nations Interยญnaยญtional Search and Rescue Adviยญsory Group (INSARAG) in 2021 and operยญates accordยญing to interยญnaยญtional stanยญdards. Fundยญing for operยญaยญtions, trainยญing, and equipยญment is primarยญily donor-funded.
